FUNDATIONS by Wilson
Second grade Fundations builds on the basic skills that were learned in Kindergarten and First grade. We will progress further into the study of word structure. This will be combined with a wide variety of text experiences that will expose students to poetry, narrative, and informational texts.
In second grade we will be focusing on the procedures, concepts, and applications for the following areas:
*Know and apply grade-level phonics and word-analysis skills in decoding words
*Distinguish long and short vowels when reading
*Read and spell words with r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur)
*Read and spell words with vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ey, ea, oi, oy, oa, ow, oe, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, aw)
*Read and spell words with unexpected vowel sounds (old, ild, ind, ost, olt, ive)
*Read and spell words with common suffixes and prefixes
*Read and spell the first 200 high frequency words including irregular words
*Use punctuation and capitalization properly
*Answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions with narrative and informational text
*Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges
*Determine the central message of a story

Handwriting Without Tears
Handwriting Without Tears in second grade focuses on fine tuning our handwriting capabilities and basic writing formats. It's important for each student to reinforce the understanding of letter formation. Throughout the year we will be practicing forming our letters and ensuring that our pencil stays connected to the paper when possible. This is a big review year to help students to practice neat and legible penmanship.
Students will:
-Use the Printing Power HWT book
-Reference the correct way to form letters and numbers via HWT chants
-Work on good handwriting habits
Attached is a welcome letter from the Handwriting Without Tears Website for 2nd graders:

Lucy Calkins Readers Workshop
Reader's Workshop is a program that emphasizes the relationship between a reader and text. Students learn to ask questions for clarification, make predictions and connections based off of previously read literature. We will use conferences both peer to peer and peer to faculty to strengthen the comprehension and understanding of texts that are being read and discussed in class. This will strengthen each reader's independence and comprehension making them stronger and more independent reader's.
