Hi Kinder Families, The kiddos had a FANTASTIC week back after February vacation. I was thrilled to see all on my students Monday morning and be able to get back to preparing your child for 1st grade!! Important Reminders: -Monday 3/13 is the LAST DAY to turn in any cooking basket donations for our class basket. -Monday is GYM day, so please have your child wear or pack sneakers for gym to safely run around in. -Sadly, mother nature can't decide if she wants spring to come or winter to stay...so PLEASE send your child to school with appropriate winter snow gear. It looks like we will be getting some more snow at the start of the week. -Scholastic Book Orders are due by Friday, March 17th. Our class order will be placed in the afternoon before I leave. -Auction ticket prices go up later this week so PURCHASE your ticket ASAP to get the lower rate! -Please continue to ADD your child's TRICK WORDS to their at home ring. I am beginning to see a big improvement with the children who set aside time to practice at home. In addition, please make sure you check and empty your child's folder DAILY. We are well into our 2nd trimester and your child has been working diligently in all subject areas. Here is what we have been working on since vacation: Academic Day: Literacy: Students returned from vacation reviewing former trick words and were introduced to 2 new words. Students not only learn to visually recognize and spell the words but also correctly use it in a sentence. Kindergarten students continue to practice their handwriting with Miss M three times a week and independently the other two days. In reading group, the children have been continuing to work on decoding words and reading with expression. In addition, students have been working on retelling a story they read or heard aloud. Key components of comprehending a story include: describing the setting, character(s), beginning, middle and end. You too can use these story detail components at home with your child. Math: During our math block this week, students learned about two main concepts: length and 2D shapes. At the start of the week, the kids were introduced to length and measurement. We brainstormed various tools we could use to measure and began to compare two different lengths at a time. Students then worked with a partner to describe and compare to lengths. Students also utilized words such as long, short, equal to, same, longer than, shorter than. Towards the end of the week, students took a look at shapes and learned the difference between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional. We worked on drawing 2D shapes in our math journals and sky drawing them. When we return from the weekend, students will build 3D shapes with some marshmallows and toothpicks. Enrichment Day: Science: We have changed over science units to learn about the Water Cycle. Students used their knowledge from our previous weather unit to start off this new topic of study. In Kindergarten, children will learn about three main parts that continuously cycle through like a circle (condensation, precipitation & evaporation). Health: We were lucky enough to have a visit from a local dentist office. Students joined 1st grade to learn about dental health and received some goodies!! Below are some picture :) MICRO:
