Good Evening Families, Wow...I cannot believe that Memorial Day weekend is already here! We have 10 more full days of school left (the last day of school is a half day with NO LUNCH). As you can see, it has been hard for me to find a chunk of time to provide you an update...the end of the school year is in full swing! Important Info: -End of year assessments are still continuing through 5/31 -Micro Marketplace has officially completed, however your child will still meet with their venture or agency to wrap up Micro concepts and have a celebration. -Field Day is on June 1st (ALL DAY) our grade level color is YELLOW. Your child is required to wear a yellow shirt/yellow clothes on Friday. It will be hot, so please provide a water bottle and a LUNCH FROM HOME (we do not have lunch service this day). -Town Hall Meeting on June 4th Big Kindergarten Expo! *You are invited to our classroom on Friday June 8th from 9:30-10:15 AM. Your son/daughter will be showing off their writing notebook. You will get to see pieces that they wrote from back in October to recent publishings. It is amazing to see how far they have come since back in September. -If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] Kindergarten Academics Literacy: Over the last 2 weeks, your child has been participating in end of year assessments. Your child is being evaluated on letter names, letter sounds, segmenting words and reading nonsense words. In addition, each student is evaluated on their present level DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) for this time of year. As assessments have been occurring, your child has been practicing a variety of literacy skills independently. Skills such as identifying rhyming words, digraphs, practicing sight words, writing, reading CVC words and even working on some comprehension activities after reading a story. Math: Throughout the last 2 weeks in math, your child has also participated in end of the year assessments. At this time, your child is evaluated on identifying numbers 0-10, identifying the larger number in a pair, counting to 100 and identifying a missing number from a sequence. Even though we have had a lot of assessments to finish up, I have continued teaching our Everyday Math program. We have officially wrapped up unit 8 and will be moving on to unit 9 on Tuesday. During the week of 5/14: your son/daughter worked on reading and understanding word problems both individually and in partners, developing their very own addition or subtraction number story and playing cooperative games such as "Car Race". Car Race is a game that can be played a variety of ways, however works on building your child's ability to apply both addition and subtraction in a fun way. During the week of 5/21: your child started the week by learning how to order nonconsecutive numbers. For example, when given the following numbers (23, 4, 17, 90) they learned how to order from smallest to greatest and vise vera. We then worked on adding a twist to our favorite "addition top it" game. Students would each flip their own card over and needed to add the 2 numbers together to call out the sum. This added a fun challenge to a game (top it) that we have been playing all year. On Thursday, students learned about "function machines", something they will see a lot of in first grade. function machines, provide a rule and the child needs to apply the rule with the given starting number. For example, if the starting number is 6 and the rule of the function machine is +2, the number that pops out of the machine is 8 (6 + 2 =8). By Friday, students were ready for MDW and we wrapped up our unit 8 by working in partners to compile name collection posters. Your child drew and wrote things all based off of a number given to them. If a group was given the number 10, they could write an addition problem, the number word, draw 10 flowers etc. all to represent the number 10. Kindergarten Enrichment Program Science: Over the last two weeks, students have been working on their ability to identify several different states of matter. We have completed whole class activities as a group and several hands on activities such as the sink or float experiment about liquids. Recently, we explored magnetism in class. Students received an opportunity to estimate random classroom objects that would or would not be magnetic. In addition, we have read stories about magnetism, watched a Bill Nye clip on magnetism and a few select videos. Bill Nye Video Get Epic books about Magnetism Micro: We officially wrapped up our school year with Marketplace. Your child was able to go out one last time this week to visit their favorite businesses and buy a variety of products and pay for a service. In these last few days of school, we will wrap up teaching about some micro concepts, hand our awards and celebrate a successful business. Dear Families, Below will be an update for the last two weeks! Only 20 more days of school left before summer vacation. This past week, students received their Student Treasures book in the mail! They were beyond excited to share with Miss Walchak (2nd grade teacher) that they voted and wanted to dedicate the book to her! We gave her a personalized copy to keep and she was so grateful! Kindergarten Academics: Literacy: (4/30-5/4)--> Students began learning about digraphs in class. They were exposed to WH, SH, TH and CH. The students know digraphs as "2 letters that make one sound". For each digraph we have have a specific movement that the children do along with the sound. Movements: CH--> moving your right arm up and down and saying "choo, choo" SH--> putting your pointer finger over lips and saying "shhhhhhh" TH--> sticking your tongue slightly out of your mouth and saying "/thhhhhhh/" WH--> pretending to whistle and making the "/whhhhh/" sound In addition, the children continued to learn 3 new sight words: very, yes & out. The students practiced these new sight words all week through games and worksheets. This was the last week of sight words for the 2017-2018 school year. (5/7/-5/11)--> Students continued to practice all 45 of their sight words through worksheets, reading books and a variety of games in the classroom. In addition, the students worked on identifying and reading words that have digraphs in them. In one activity this week, the children chose a word with a digraph. From there, your child wrote a complete sentence using that word and applying their Kindergarten writing mechanics. Towards the middle of the week, our class learned about the CK digraph. Students now know that CK is an ending and can be applied to a word when that word uses a short vowel and is a one syllable word such as kick, sick, pick and flick. The student even got an opportunity to show their appreciation towards one MACS staff member in a fun writing activity! Pictures of some examples are below :) Math: (4/30-5/4)-->When we returned from vacation, our class worked on identifying numbers 0-20 in class as well as counting 0-100, as this will be a skill assessed in a few weeks. During this week, we were also able to reinforce our addition skills by rolling 2, 3 or 4 dice and adding them together in a math problem. The children enjoyed playing the "missing number" game which requires the children to think conceptually about numbers before, after and in between a starting point. We ended the week by recalling attribute blocks and using them to identify after needing to describe them to the class, working on graphing and lastly work in small groups to create word problems. (5/7/-5/11)--> Students continued to identify 2D and 3D shapes by feel and by using describing words with their peers. Students were able to recall shape names both independently and in small groups. Later in the week, we had an opportunity use toothpicks and mini marshmallows to build those 2D and 3D shapes previously talked about in class a few days before. All students are truly working hard to remember these shapes and use their words to describe them to a peer. Later in the week, students practiced counting to 100 while starting from a number other than 0 (ex: starting at 47). We practiced saying the correct sequence of numbers. However, we ended up playing a silly game of "Interrupting Counting". This is where one person begins counting and the audience has to listen for that person to make a mistake and then interrupt them counting. This allows the students to listen and observe sequential counting in the classroom. By the very end of the week, the students worked on both their addition and subtraction skills to 10. Remember to have your child work on their fact fluency with Xtramath at home :) Kindergarten Enrichment Cinco De Mayo Fun! On May 4th, Miss Froleiks threw the class a CIno de Mayo festival in the classroom. We learned all about the holiday (a day early), incorporated Mexican culture into our lessons and read silly stories such as Cinco de Mouse-o in class. Science: In science, we have been learning about matter. The children are exploring different properties such as weight, texture and color. We often refer to the below poster in the classroom to help us complete a variety of explorations and worksheets. This past week, we investigated solids, liquids and gases. Soon, we will be conducting some hands on experiments to get the children connecting real world items to their learning. Coming Up & Reminders:
-There are no new sight words for the remainder of the school year. Please continue to practice the 45 sight words that your child has been exposed to over the last few months. These words are "rule breakers" and are frequently found in books that your child is reading in class. -From May 14th - May 25th, your child will be completing end of the year assessments in Kindergarten. Please make sure they get plenty of rest and eat a good healthy breakfast to that they are energized and ready to show off their big beautiful brains! -From May 14th - May 31st, grades 3-7 will be performing state testing. Although this is not our grade level is causes our class schedule to change. We will be having specials on different days, times and even lunch has changed for us a few days a week. We will need to remain flexible all throughout these next few weeks. Happy testing and assessing to all MACS students. Hello Families, Below is the weekly happenings from before vacation! Miss Froleiks is back from Charleston, South Caroline and ready to see her well rested kiddos! We will be starting a countdown to the end of the school year tomorrow :) How exciting! Kindergarten Academics Literacy: Students learned their 3 new sight words: of, some, he. Your child used their writing knowledge to use these sight words in sentences! Students also continued to work on identifying vowel sounds inside words. In addition, Miss Froleiks introduced digraphs to your child. Your child will be learning more about digraphs after vacation. The following are the digraphs we will utilize in class: th, sh, wh, ch. Towards the end of the week, students worked on identifying various story elements in a few different read aloud books. Story elements such as: telling who the characters are, where the setting is, if there was a problem and what its solution etc. Math: This week in math, your child continued to work on their 2 day surveying and collecting data lesson. I was extremely impressed with how the students worked together to collaborate and analyze data that they collected. Below are some pictures of their final projects (graphing their data). Later in the week, students learned about estimation and we were able to estimate different sized jars/containers in class. We discussed why some estimations were good or not good. For example if I had a mason jar filled halfway with M&M's, then you would not estimate that there were 1 millions M&M's in there. Lastly, your child worked to create think of two numbers that add up to equal a number given by me on a sticky note. Students were given a number (5-12) on a sticky note and think of ways to add up. For some students, they needed manipulates to help them, other students could do this activity mentally. Dental Health Visit On Tuesday, Kindergarten and first grade students went upstairs to the MPR to view a dental hygiene presentation. A dental hygienist from Nashua Dentisty came in to share information about why we brush our teeth and how important it really is. MICRO DAY FUN: Thank you to all of the families to attended Micro Day at MACS on Wednesday 4/18! The kids enjoyed showing off their Micro jobs :) Science: In science, we continued to work on identifying various properties in objects. Below is the poster your child references in class. Micro: Congratulations to Sophia L. for being selected at Aprils Employee of the Month! Her managers recognized her for ability to problem solve and ask for help when needed! She seeks out her managers and helps guide her fellow employees. Happy Sunday Kinder Families! I cannot believe there is snow on the ground again! April showers bring May flowers...but what do April snow showers bring? Your child has one more week before April vacation! I plan to have lots of outdoor time (as long as Mother Nature cooperates) this week. We will also continue our research on how to keep our earth happy! Reminders: Monday April 16th Day 2 of Talent Show Auditions Wednesday April 18th is Mirco Day and an EARLY RELEASE for students Tuesday April 17th we have Nashua Dentistry coming in April Vacation runs from the 21st-29th Kindergarten Academic Day Literacy This week was full of sight word and phonics practice! Your son/daughter continued to learn about when to use a C or K in their writing. In addition, they also demonstrated their abilities to write complete sentences using the special Handwriting without tears lines! I couldn't be prouder! Below are some photos of our spring writing in the hallway :) Last weeks sight words were: from, me & be. We practiced identifying these words in a variety of stories during one of our literacy centers. Students are continually tapping out words in their writing and CVC word activities. Also, we have been practicing asking and answering comprehension questions. *As you read stories at home think about asking: -Who are the characters in the story? -Was their a problem in the story? Tell me about it. -If there was a problem, how did it get solved? -Where do you think this story took place? Coming up on Friday April 20th, Miss Froleiks will be shipping out our Student Treasures book! Your child has been working extremely hard on creating a detailed picture that matches their page of writing. Next Weeks Sight Words: of, some, he Next Weeks Curriculum: We are entering Unit 4 of Fundations and are learning about digraphs (wh, sh, th, ch)! Math In math this week, your child continued to develop their abilities for recognizing and building teen numbers. They worked in partners to show teen numbers in 2 ten frames as well as identify which one was greater or fewer. We also revisited solid shapes. Students described solid shapes and were able to verbally label real world pictures posted from a powerpoint. Check out the book we watched to look at 3D shapes--> CLICK HERE By mid-week, students were learning about skip counting in class. We talked about different ways to skip count and how this is a skill they will be practicing for many years! To start, we reviewed skip counting by 10's up to 100. This is a skill we have been working on since the start of the school year. Next, we moved on to skip counting to by 5's and finally by 2's. I love incorporating movements for the kids to practice these skills! The following are some videos we watched to help us practice skip counting: Skip Counting By 5's Skip Counting By 2's By the end of my week, we were investigating about data and conducting surveys. Your child was partnered up and decided a question they wanted to ask their peers. Students recorded their data on a sheet of paper using tally marks! Next week, they will learn how to turn their data into a graph! Below, you will also see our subtraction bulletin board activity :) Kindergarten Enrichment Science We are excited to be learning about properties in science! Your child is learning about to describe certain properties of an object. Students work together to share about an objects: size, shape, mass, texture and color. We began reading our Delta Science books as a whole class. Below is a poster we reference in class about properties. Next week, your child will continue to learn about properties, however will also learn about Earth Day (Celebrated on April 22nd over vacation). On Friday, we previewed what could help our Earth. Back in the Fall, students learned about plants in science so we looked back on this topic. Students remembered that plants need water and sunlight, however the whole class discovered how soil can have special elements call nutrients to help them grow and thrive. More Earth Day investigation to come this week :) MicroSociety A huge thank you to families who donated some of the items in need for our venture. We had a successful first week of mailing packages to students in school. Next week, we will prepare for Micro Day and get ready for Mom's, Dad's and family members to visit us working in our Micro City! Congratulations to Shermann who was our Employee of the Month back in March (apparently I never posted about it). He earned some extra micro money from his Managers for his excellent work ethic at the Post Office! Also a huge congratulations to Sreehaas who is April's Employee of the Month for the Post Office! Happy Saturday Big K Families, I hope you are all well. For those of you who attended the Candyland dance last night, it was great to see you and I hope your family enjoyed your time there. Lord Licorice sure had a blast. Student Treasure Forms: Many of you have returned your child's Student Treasure form to purchase a copy of our class book. Your son/daughter is working extremely hard to have beautiful penmanship and a creatively detailed picture. All forms are due by Friday, April 13th. This means even if you choose not to purchase a copy of our class book, I still need to receive the form back with the bock checked "no". Outdoor Gear: As you have seen at drop off and pick up times, there is no snow on our playground. However, when we go outside in the morning, it can still be very cold. I strongly suggest sending your child with boots to keep their feet warm, a hat and gloves/mittens. My first priority is to keep your child safe and comfortable at school. This past week we did not need snow pants however, several students were complaining of being cold when playing outside and I observed them not being appropriately dressed for outdoor play. Scholastic Book Orders: Scholastic book orders are due by Friday, April 13th! This month, you have the ability to receive a FREE $5 book with your order. What a great opportunity to get a few books for your eager reader :) Our class code is: Q2PHY Scholastic does not accept cash with orders so please submit checks with your order OR order online and pay with a credit card. Checks should be made out to: Scholastic Inc Kindergarten Academics Literacy: This week, your child primarily focused working on their page in our class book. All students wrote a rough draft of their adventure with Hank. Your child used a sentence starter and then developed two sentences on their own using writing mechanics and sounding out skills. In addition, this week we learned 3 new sight words: or, by, one. We continually identify them, spell them and use them in sentences throughout the school week. Towards the end of the school week, we took a break from our Hank story and did some brainstorming about spring. The students have been sharing their feelings on being tired of winter and excited for more outdoor time and sunshine in spring. This lead us to do some spring writing! Next Weeks Sight Words: me, from, be Math: This week in math, we continued to talk about subtraction. We are working on subtracting within 5 and sometimes 10 in whole group. At this time, it is absolutely normal for your child to confuse addition and subtraction concepts! We are looking into identifying the two different symbols in class (-, +). Miss Froleiks talks about subtraction as "taking away" or "going away". In class this week, I shared verbal math stories with the child and they had to act out the problem in small groups. For example: There were five boys jumping up and down. One boy hurt himself so he had to sit out. How many boys are left jumping up and down? This type of activity allows the students to get physical with math! Towards mid-week, we were moving right along to Unit 7 in Everyday Math! The students were able to begin this unit by practicing their addition fluency and early subtraction skills. We played fun games like Domino Addition! Next week we will be revisiting teen numbers! Xtra Math: Families, please remember to use xtramath.org as a resource for your child to practice their addition fact fluency on a regular basis. I have access to seeing their progress and even have an incentive for the kiddos in class. The students are aware, if they complete a level and are prompted to receive a certificate, they receive $20 micro dollars, lunch in the classroom and I buy them an ice cream on ice cream Friday. What could be better! Kindergarten Enrichment Social Studies: Your son/daughter has finished learning about popular American Symbols in class. They have learned over 10 important symbols along with several fun facts! This week we wrapped up American symbols by learning about the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Rushmore in class. Students were able to listen to stories in class and via GetEpic.com! The children were fascinated to learn about the location of Mount Rushmore along with how many people it took to sculpt the monument! Below are some of the videos we watched in class too: Lincoln Memorial 1 I Am Abraham Lincoln Mount Rushmore 1 Mount Rushmore 2 Mount Rushmore 3 Next week, the children and I will be transitioning into a new science unit about properties for the month of April and part of May! Micro: This week, it was our turn to put on a skit about a new character trait. April is all about self-care! Students in Miss F's class learned about what it means to take care of yourself...mind and body! The children did an absolute fantastic job and received SEVERAL positive compliments from fellow students and staff members. Your child has officially been at their "new" business for 2 weeks now. Please remember, that some students in K, K, 1 chose to switch ventures to learn about a new business. At the post office, our students are learning about difficult struggles businesses can sometimes go through. Currently, our business is struggling to get an abundance of customers. Your child brainstormed different ideas and then wrote about it in a reflection early in the week. On Wednesday, some of the ideas your son/daughter came up with were implemented. By Friday, a few of the changes saw a great positive impact on our business. Donations for the MACS Post Office Venture: Currently, a few of the students ideas revolve around "shipping" food products to customers in our school. Our business is in search of the following items that we would "purchase" from the Micro City Warehouse. If interested, please send in an item(s) with your child in the backpack and I can take care of the rest! Mini Rice Krispy Treats DUM DUMS Lollipops Mini Composition Books MICRO DAY is happing on Wednesday April 18th! It is an early release day, and we would like to invite family members to come and visit the Micro City Marketplace in action! In order to accommodate all of our families, we will have three 45-minute rounds of visitors. Please us the link below to sign up for a 45-minute session. IMPORTANT: When signing up, please select the TOTAL number of visitors in your party from the "Quantity" drop-down menu so that we are prepared for the right number of people at each session. Here is the Sign Up Genius link: CLICK HERE Hello Families, I hope you are enjoying this "warm" spring like weekend in NH! If some of you are celebrating Easter this weekend, Happy Easter to you :) This week in Kindergarten, your child worked hard to show respect and integrity to classmates and teachers in the building. At this point in the school year, students are very comfortable with their peers and at times, this can cause declining behavior in various times throughout the day. Just like the first 6 weeks of school, I have gone back to re-teaching about classroom/school expectations, respect and responsibilities of being a Kindergartener. Kindergarten Academics Literacy: This week in literacy, your child continued to practice their sight words, reading cvc or cvcc words and applying new literacy tools such as deciphering between c and k. Furthermore, your child has truly been stopping to think about wether to write a c or k in their writing when sounds out words. Miss F has posters in the classroom for the children to reference with helpful visuals. In addition, this week brought a closer look into reading sentences with expression based on punctuation. Your child is now familiar will periods (.) exclamation points (!) and question marks (?). Students observed Miss Froleiks reading with expression and then received an opportunity to mimmic. Next Weeks Sight Words: one, or, by Writing: Your child has begun their writing page in our Student Treasures class book. Our class book is entitled: The Adventures of Hank. Your son/daughter created 2-3 sentences about where they would hide Hank (our class mascot) if they had the opportunity. All students are wrapping up their rough drafts early next week, then students will move to copying their work on to the "special" paper the Student Treasures company provides us. Math: Subtraction, subtraction, subtraction! This week was all about subtraction. Students look at subtraction as "taking away". I encourage students to physically TAKE AWAY cubes/counters as they are answering math problems. I introduced subtraction to the kiddos by reading "The Minus Sign" book. As I am sure you saw, a bright blue Everyday Math sheet was sent home on Monday. This sheet was intended to inform you of what we are practicing in school. No need to send anything back to school! Later in the week, students applied this subtraction concept to past games taught in class. Games such as "Disappearing Train" and "Hiding Bears". The students worked in small groups/partners to apply this new math concept. Hello Families, WOW! Can you believe your child has finished 2 full trimesters of school?! Miss F is currently working on inputing report cards into ALMA. This means report cards will go live around 4 PM on Friday March 30th. In other news, it was great to have the kiddos for a solid 5 days this week. When was the last time that happened?! We have some exciting events coming up in April so I want to write about them now: Spring Dance: Your child and family have an opportunity to attend a family oriented "Candyland Dance"! Bright green ticket forms went home earlier this week. The dance will be held at St. Patricks/ Nashua PAL Gym on Friday April 6th from 6:30-8pm. The cost is $10 per student. ****Please see the flyer attached HERE Please also take the time to look at this sign up genius to donate items: CLICK HERE Published Book: Starting Monday, March 19th your son/daughter will begin to work on a very special piece of writing in class. Their writing will go into a book and become published through a fun company called Student Treasures. You have the opportunity to purchase our collective class book at a discounted rate using the attached flyer HERE. Please know that on Monday, your child will bring home documents for this project that will need to be signed regardless of wanted to purchase a book or not (there will be a "no thank you" box to check". Kindergarten Academics: Literacy: Your child has spent the past week applying decoding and phonics strategies to their reading. We have been focusing on segmenting words into the sounds we hear. This is a crucial skill that gets assessed each trimester. Words such as dog would be segmented into /d/o/g/ or ship into /sh/i/p/. This is an activity that you could practice at home as well. Towards the end of the week, your child was introduced to story elements. After reading a book, your child should be able to tell about the character(s) in the story, talk about the setting and discuss main events. Students learned of 3 new sight words: here, as, we. They practiced spelling them as well as using them in a complete sentence that made sense in our brains! Next Weeks Sight Words: where, play, has Math: In math, students reviewed filling out a graph using survey information. We chose to graph about pets at home. Our class worked hard to report back information they learned from the graph as well! On Tuesday, the class reviewed information about 2D and 3D shapes and compared them with with each other. We worked collectively to sort solid and flat shapes as a whole group. This activity even allowed the children to practice naming the newly introduced 3D shapes. By the end of the week, students worked on breaking a part a word problem to figure out if they were tall enough to ride a rollercoaster. Students had to give reasons based on the word problem to why or why not they were considered "tall enough". By Friday, the class drew themselves and made sure to list how tall they were in comparison to sticky notes. Next Week: Students will be learning about subtraction! Kindergarten Enrichment: Social Studies: In social studies this week, we wrapped up talking about the Statue of Liberty. Students were able to view a GO-PRO video to see directly inside Lady Liberty. The students had a unanimous vote that it would be way to many stairs for them to climb! By mid- week, students were off learning about the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We continued to read a few books and watch a few videos. Below is a video we watched to gain more information: CLICK HERE Through researching about the Liberty Bell, we discovered all of the different parts to it as well as fun facts. Miss M completed a directed drawing with the students about the Liberty Bell. On Thursday and Friday, the students and I worked to create a Liberty Bell craft pictured below. Up Next Week: We will learn about the Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore! MICRO: This week, students were finally able to start up marketplace again. It took two weeks for K, K, 1 kiddos to interview and be hired at businesses. Ask your son or daughter if they changed jobs or businesses all together! We welcome new employees who come from first grade and Miss Preston's kindergarten class. Some students even had their day off change as well. Below are some pictures of the different employees jobs. Hi Families, I hope you enjoyed the extended weekend your son/daughter got! Our class had an amazing week of reading fun for Read Across America Week at MACS. Your child was exposed to various reading activities, as well as guest readers from the community. Miss F & Miss M had so much fun dressing up for each days theme. The students were also good sports about the hectic weather we had, causing a closing and a 2 hour delay mid-week. I think we can all say....BRING ON SPRING :) Kindergarten Academic Day:
Literacy: As you know, this week was extremely short. When we have a two hour delay, both Kindergarten teachers decided wether we will teacher math or literacy in the block of time before or normal lunch. This crazy winter in 2018 has caused Miss Preston and I to rotate which subject we hold off on until the following day. With this said, your child was able to learn about the next three sight words on our Kindergarten list. Students made notecards for the following words: they, his, what. These notecards go home in orange folders and should be added to your child's at home sight word ring. We are continuing to read both CVC words and nonsense words in small groups and independently. Practice reading these words help students build confidence and allow for memorization in letter sound recall. Students this week also took time to write about each themed Read Across America day. The following were some of the writing prompts: 1. If the Cat in the Hat came to your house, how would you get him to leave? 2. What is one invention that you wish to create that would help our world? Math: In math, we have been continuing to build math fluency with math facts at different ranges. Students starting out built their fluency 0-5. After mastering those facts, children moved on to mastering 6-10. At this moment in our school year, I organize several fact fluency groups in our one classroom. Please watch out for information coming home about what fact fluency group your son/daughter is working on right now. Below is how I organize the groups: 1. addition 0-5 2. addition 6-10 3. addition 11-15 4. addition 16-20 5. subtraction 0-5 6. subtraction 6-10 7. subtraction 11-15 8. subtraction 16-20 Kindergarten Enrichment Program Social Studies: The children have been very excited to move on from the bald eagle to learn about the Statue of Liberty. It has been great to have students share personal connections with their classmates about fun facts they already knew before starting this research. Several students have even seen the Statue of Liberty in person! Your child has had a few books read to them about the statue of liberty such as: The Statue of Libery by Tyler Monroe and L is for Liberty by Wendy Cheyette Lewison. Through these books, your child has learned where the Statue of Liberty is located, why we have it, who gave it to us, how it got to us and so much more. On Monday, we will wrap up learning about this American symbol by watching a video to recap all of the information we learned! Videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5tncvdWyeU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS6YMKlwpjs We will also be investigating why Lady Liberty is green. We will be referencing this video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R5ejcO2cgQ MICRO: This past week all ventures and agencies remained SHUT DOWN due to the snow days from the week before (and this week too). Your son/daughter should know their new job placement (with the exception of 2-3 kiddos) if they chose to change jobs or change businesses all together. Mondays are Manager Meeting days so on Tuesday (3/20) students will report to their new jobs! This is an exciting time for students because it allows them to experience new job responsibilities or demonstrate leadership elements in their remaining job post. Hello Big K Families, I hope your child came home from their first week back at school with a smile on their face! I noticed that the children were refreshed and extremely well behaved! They were able to earn "Fun Friday" very quickly. This week, we jumped back into our routine of practicing math facts, reading CVC words and identifying our trick words. Kindergarten Academic Day: Literacy: This week in literacy, students completed independent tasks of writing out cvc words on whiteboards that Miss F said aloud. Students are continually reinforcing their abilities to recall letter names and sounds. It is extremely important that the children practice recalling their vowel sounds as they are tricky! We were able to jump back in to learning about 3 new sight words: are, to, is. The children name these trick words daily when they have to say the magic "password" to get into the classroom. During independent reading time, many of the children are beginning to identify sight words in stories they are reading. Later in the week, the children were able to practice their sentence structure when writing a birthday book page to a classmate. Miss F is always looking for the students to start their sentences with a capital letter, have finger spaces in between words written and end with a punctuation mark. I have enjoyed watching children choose to free write during choice time a few times a week as well! Additionally, the children worked on writing out nonsense words with whiteboards at Miss F's table. This helps the children truly listen for correct sounds in a word. Nonsense words can also be called make believe words. Math: During math this week, the children reviewed shapes. They practiced identifying 2D shapes as well as drawing them independently. Towards the end of the week, we revisited these shapes and talked about what the difference of 2D and 3D shapes was. Students were able to notices similarities and differences amongst these shapes. Students were able to see examples of 3D shapes thanks to a kit Miss F had purchased. The children referred to a poster made by Miss M, to compare. In addition, the children completed a sort using 3D real world objects that were brought in. See pictures below! Also, students worked on body height and length comparisons mid-week. On Tuesday, each child was measured using a string to compare class heights. We talked about who was the tallest and shortest and what evidence proved that (i.e. Sahas his the tallest because his string is longest compared to other students in the classroom). After comparing body heights, we compared heights of straws and other objects around the school. Kindergarten Enrichment: Social Studies: During social studies this week, we focused on learning about the Bald Eagle in our American Symbols unit. On Monday, we did review the symbols we had previously gone over in class. Through research, we discovered that bald eagles are not born with a white head and bottom. Mature bald eagles grow into that look. We have been reading several books and watching short videos on this symbol. The children have found it interesting that a bald eagle can be a size of a three year old! Here are some videos we have watched in class: https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/bald-eagle/#bald-eagle-closeup.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC3Wjt1noQw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKficmlxzaI Micro: This week in micro, our Micro City society was shut down. Businesses are changing out exhibits, our pop up businesses are switching over and some ventures are changing out employees. For our class, the children were able to choose between keeping the exact job they had, switching job roles within our venture or totally switching out of our venture to a new business. For the children changing businesses and changing job roles, they needed to complete new job applications and resumes. By Friday, some students were reading to interview with the Little Kinder venture and first grade venture. Stay tuned to see where your child will be working! On Monday we had a town hall meeting! Congrats to Ezra and Lucas who earned themselves an integrity award for their positive actions in the classroom! Way to go :) Fun Friday = Longer Outdoor Recess: |
