Happy Sunday Families, What a beautiful weekend this has been! We have been busy learning about quantity discrimination, shapes and letters! Students are now in the routine of our daily schedule and have been focused during literacy rotations. Announcements: -Information about our MACS walk-a-thon went home on Friday afternoon. -Please continue to check AND send in your child's orange folder nightly. -Sneakers on Thursday's for Gym! Kindergarten Academics: Literacy: Over the last two weeks, students have been working on letters U, I, O and C. They are identifying these letters as well as saying their specific sound. During whole group lessons, we skywrite letters and brainstorm words that begin with the letter we are talking about that day. The children have been completing several different worksheets that help identify beginning sounds and handwriting practice. In addition, all Kindergarten students have been actively participating in reading group. At the start of the year we learn about reading posture, how to do a picture walk and how to read along with the group (i.e. looking at the story in front of you and pointing to each word). Math: We have been very busy learning new games and practicing old ones! Games such as Top-It or Memory are new to us and we have been playing them using our dot cards. These cards help students with counting and grouping for "quick looks". Last week, students practiced how to complete an AB, AAB, ABB or ABC pattern. In addition, our class has been identifying various shapes in class. We have had a few lessons over the last two weeks on shape names and being able to identify real world objects as shapes (i.e. our classroom door is a rectangle). On Wednesday, we dove deeper into triangles! Students learned two new vocabulary words: vertex and side. Kindergarten Enrichment: Science: Over this past week, we finished up talking about the life cycle of a pumpkin. Students were able to successfully label the different stages of how a pumpkin grows. One key element to our lessons, was learning about using appropriate colors for each life cycle stage. COMING UP: We will be learning about bats! Students will discover unique information about bats and their body elements (i.e. wing, teeth, head etc.). Social Students: The children and I finished up learning about different community helpers in our world. Students were able to identify these workers verbally and out in the real world! It was awesome to see our MACS mailman drive by at recess and the students yell "Thank you community helper!". Students from our class were also doing this for UPS workers and garbage men/women. This unit was also great to be able to connect our MICRO venture to it. COMING UP: We will be transitioning into talking about Needs and Wants for the holiday season. Buddy Reading: On Wednesday, students from Miss Froleiks' and Miss Carideo's class buddy read. The students are beginning to be more comfortable with one another and have a blast together :) MICRO: In MICRO we have begun to fill out resumes with the help of our teachers Miss F and Miss M. Students have been learning about what a resume is and why you need one to apply for jobs. Coming up this week, Kindergarten will be interviewing a few "Big Kids" who have shown interest to be our Financial and Product Managers. Later in the week, the children will fill out a job application for the specific job they want within our Post Office Venture. In addition, we also read a book about being an Entrepreneur.
